10 Ways to Use Your Mehu-Liisa Steam Juicer in the New Year 2018

Here are ten ways you can use your Mehu-Liisa steam juicer from Finland in the coming New Year:

Many folks eat seafood on New Year’s Day. The Mehu-Liisa is ideal for steaming all kinds of shellfish, crabs, and whole fish. Check back for my Cioppino recipe in the New Year.


2. Steam juice your excess frozen fruit.

Come February and March, the fruit you stored in your freezer from the previous year is starting to near the end of its most nutritious frozen condition. Now is a good time to juice up those bags of berries, peaches, and other fruits that are still in the freezer.

Mix and match to make mixed berry juices. Using peaches as a base for raspberries, strawberries, and cherries is a great technique. Use a ratio of about 2 quarts mixer berry to 6 quarts of base fruit. Base fruits are best if they are mild and light colored: peaches, pears, white grapes, apples.


3. Make wine from the excess frozen fruit juice.

Whatever berry you have the most of in late winter can be made into delicious wine. I often have excess raspberries and blueberries in my freezer. Both make excellent wine.

Late winter doldrums can be lifted with some fresh jelly made from juice you put by in the previous season. I prefer to use Pomona Pectin so I can gauge the sugar level to my preference.

In less than ten minutes, you can have versatile simple syrup made from your stored juice.


6. Steam cook your potatoes and corned beef on St. Patrick’s Day.

If you make your own corned beef, letting it cure in a brine for up to 4 weeks, steaming it in the Mehu-Liisa steam juicer will become your favorite way to cook the meat to perfect tenderness. Check back for my recipe in March.


7. Steam cook some pastrami.

While you’re at it with the corned beef, get some extra brisket and continue on after the brining to smoke and steam cook some nice pastrami! Check back in March for a pastrami recipe.

This is such a wonderful way to cook a bird to perfection and come away with clear, concentrated, flavorful broth ready to be used in your gravy. Here are the directions.

Great way to store up some meatless broth. Follow the recipe linked to above and increase the carrot, celery, and tomatoes to your liking.


10. Tell a friend about your Mehu-Liisa steam juicer.

Make plans to do some u-pick outings together in the coming season, and share your recipes and the products you have made. Let them borrow the juicer (be sure to tell them to keep an eye on the water pan!! Use a timer to avoid burning it dry) and you can bet they will want to get one of their own. As my father used to say, “Ask a Mehu-Liisa user and you’ll become one yourself!”
